Technical Biochemistry and Bioprocess Engineering at the TU Dortmund University Summer Festival 2026

One focus was on the distillation of essential oils from lemons and rosemary. A clear demonstration was given of how the volatile compounds can be isolated from the plants and what role such natural substances can play in research and practical applications. In line with this, the potential antibiotic efficacy of the extracted substances was demonstrated: In Petri dishes, so-called inhibition zones were visible, showing whether and to what extent a substance can influence the growth of microorganisms.
In addition, guests were able to examine air culture plates, which revealed which microorganisms are present in the ambient air. This prompted many interested questions and provided a clear introduction to microbiological methods.
The microscope, through which yeast cells could be observed, was also particularly popular. Younger visitors in particular took the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the microscopic world of biotechnology.
