As in the previous year, students on the "Alcoholic fermentation" practical course run by the Biozentrum had the opportunity to visit the Northoff distillery in Hultrop near Lippstadt.

The family business can look back on 300 years of distilling history, as the plant manager Mr. Wischollek reported during the tour of the distillery. From the mashing of the grain in the fermentation tanks, which can hold up to 8,500 liters, to the coarse distillation and the fine distillation in the distilleries, we also went to the barrel storage, where some brandies are rounded off in taste and thus gain in quality through years of storage in barrels.

Finally, the pear brandy distilled by the fine distillery was tasted. As part of the practical course, the students had produced the pear mash, which serves as the raw material for the pear brandy, and followed the fermentation process analytically.
