Natural Products especially the class of secondary metabolites displays a remarkable array of biological activity and many of them are clinically valuable, among others, anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-tumor agents. These compounds of interest are often biosynthesized via nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) and polyketide synthases (PKSs), which are multi-enzymatic, multi-domain megasynthases involved in the biosynthesis of nonribosomal peptides and polyketides. Providing the building blocks for these compounds to get sufficient yields is the main obstacle this project wants to tackle. Using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a well characterized organism as a basis for the generation of a platform organism to provide elevated levels of precursor molecules for PKSs and NRPSs. To generate this PKS/NRPS ready organism genome editing methods like CRISPR/CAS9 are used.
